DESCRIPTION:​The Röthenbach Gorge: Experience the raw beauty of the “Röthenbachklamm\,” where the path winds alongside a bubbling stream through impressive rock formations. \n\n​Beaver Territory: We’ll explore the areas around local beaver dams—keep your eyes peeled for the impressive craftsmanship of these local residents!\n​Forest Serenity: Most of the trail takes us through lush woodland paths\, offering plenty of shade and that deep forest “recharge.”\n\n​🥾 Route Details\n\n​Difficulty: Moderate (Good basic fitness is recommended).\n​Distance: Approx. 10.5 km.\n​Duration: We expect to be on the trail for about 2 hours and 45 minutes (plus breaks for photos and snacks!).\n​Terrain: Mostly easily-accessible paths with some slightly uneven sections in the gorge—sturdy shoes are a must!

DESCRIPTION:Gustav-Adolf Cave – Karlshöhle Rock Formation\nJoin us for a captivating and easy-going hiking trail through the famous Schwarzach Gorge (Schwarzachklamm)\, starting and ending near Ochenbruck. This loop offers an unforgettable journey through a landscape designated as one of “Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes.” The gorge itself\, a nature reserve since 1936\, is a spectacular result of the Schwarzach river’s erosive action\, which has cut its way through the Burgsandstein\, leaving behind steep walls and fascinating geological features. The path\, easily manageable for all ability levels\, runs beautifully along the river\, though sturdy shoes are recommended . \nGeological & Historical Highlights\nThe gorge is renowned for its two largest semi-caves: the Gustav-Adolf-Höhle and the Karlshöhle\, both formed by the scouring action of the river\, especially during floods. These magnificent washouts\, along with other bizarre rock formations and a spring\, create an adventure playground for young and old. \nThe Gustav-Adolf Cave is more of a passage you must go through if following the path in the gorge. Located directly on the Schwarzach\, this site is also of historical significance. A memorial plaque notes that the Swedish King Gustav Adolf II visited the cave and attended a sermon here in 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War\, giving the cave its name. Near the cave entrance\, be sure to observe the fascinating gallery or honeycomb weathering (tafone) on the rock wall—a striking example of how water and mineral components have shaped the rock over millennia. \nThe Karlshöhle is an equally fascinating sight and one of the quintessential photo spots in the gorge. You’ll reach this semi-cave automatically on the marked trail. The approach is a bit adventurous\, leading through a low passage and a crack in the rock before a wooden staircase opens into the cave’s wide space. The cave\, with its peaceful\, almost mystical atmosphere and magnificent views\, is a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the breathtaking natural scenery. \nBeyond the Gorge\nAs you complete the loop\, you’ll encounter the historic Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. This “Canale Grande” impresses with its many locks and houses. On a sunny day\, the reflections on the water provide a tranquil contrast to the wild geology of the gorge. This combination of natural wonder and historical engineering ensures a rich and varied hiking experience.

Starting at the Eckersmühlen train station\, we’ll stroll through idyllic scenery for about 4 km before reaching the water’s edge. \nOnce there\, we’ll take some time to relax or get active! The route offers optional extras like stand-up paddling or crazy golf\, which can be purchased on the day or simply find a spot to enjoy the view. We’ll then continue our journey along the lakeshore\, where we can stop for refreshments before heading to the Altenfelden railway station to catch a train back to Nuremberg.

The well-marked paths lead through diverse forest landscapes\, offering stunning views of the Wiesenttal and involves about 4 hours of walking time.

DESCRIPTION:To kick off a new series of hikes exploring Nuremberg and the region\, we will begin with the city itself and its remarkable city walls. Throughout its history\, the walls have been developed\, expanded\, relocated\, and also destroyed. At one point\, the city was split into two sections\, each enclosed by its own wall. To delve deeper into this fascinating history\, we will take a stroll around the entire wall and visit segments of the earlier\, inner city wall. The total distance will be under 10 km. We will conclude our adventure with warming drinks at a cosy café. Join us for the launch of the series “Exploring Nuremberg.” \nMembers of Global Locals can join for free. DESCRIPTION:Marking the launch of Global locals e.V. this introductory hike takes us through the renowned cherry-growing area around Pretzfeld\, just a short distance north of Nuremberg and at the height of the season.\nWe’ll be taking a 10.5 km route through the beautiful countryside renowned for its abundance of cherry trees. Near the end of the hike we will visit the beer cellar “Pretzfeld Keller”\, a popular destination during the summer months. \nWe invite you to join Global Locals e.V.\, our new non-profit organisation which is now organising events\, excursions\, English Stammtisch Nuremberg and administering the English Post Nuremberg social media and website. Membership is €45 for one year (special offer for our first 50 members) or €9/month. Funds go to support and continue our English Post online magazine for Nuremberg as well as planning and staging many more events in the coming weeks\, months and hopefully years. \nThis is an intermediate level hike.
